Wales last participated in a major tournament at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden when a John Charles inspired team reached the quarter-finals. England’s Excuses Part Two: “That” Red Card

1998-david-beckham-red-card-vs-argentina

The second installment of ‘England’s Excuses’ takes a view on how England’s inability to keep 11 men on the pitch at the 1998 and 2006 World Cups cost them dearly.

In the knock-out phase of major tournaments with the sides set at 11 vs 11, England are usually set to play smart, cautious football and proceed to the latter stages without incident. Alas, there have been times at certain World Cups where the officials have been out to get the hard-working, honest England lads, or they have been subject to gamesmanship by those foreign nasties who deal in the dark arts of the modern game which the admirable and sincere Three Lions have never ever been privy to.

sweden-getty-1511-750

We really missed Sweden at the last World Cup in 2014 and no, it wasn’t because it meant that the cameraman was unable to pan to a row of Swedish twenty-somethings in the crowd. The Panenka is glad to welcome back the only host nation to be defeated in a World Cup final as there is always something about the Sweden team that threatens to do something special. OK they’ve never won a major tournament but always seem to find themselves in the group of death or on that betting slip as you proclaim them to be this years dark horses, but hey, they may not have a realistic chance of winning it, but it is the year of the underdog after all.

Euro 2016 Team Preview: Turkey

equipe-foot-turquie

Turkey have a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde reputation in world football ranging from the magnificent achievements of finishing third at the 2002 World Cup and making it to the Semi-finals of Euro 2008 to not even qualifying at all. They’re up against some understandably high expectations given the caliber of both the players they produce and the improving level of the domestic league. Turkey also has the eyes of the world upon them for political reasons at the moment. The team and fans alike will be under pressure to give a good account of themselves at Euro 2016 because of the government’s pending application for EU membership.
